Sleeping Dog Ranch

July 5, 2010 Today, Greg took me to the Sleeping Dog Ranch, which is a leased property that provides fly-fishing only private access to the Cebolla River (Say-voy-ya). This is nice stretch of river that the owners have invested a considerable sum in to improve the fishery. Wild brown trout inhabit this typical winding meadow stream and was a treat to fish. I was able to coax several of those wild fish, a couple of which were 14”, which is a respectable fish for a stream of this size. While Greg and I fished, Kent went to Gunnison with a group from Vickers Ranch to play golf. The girls were content to hang around Lake City and visit the shops, and then to spend a good part of the day sitting on the front porch reading. Greg, Kent, and I were moaning and groaning after our physically taxing day that they talked us in to jumping in the hot tub to soothe the aches and pains - as they say, it is heck getting old.

Independence Day in the Great USA

July 4, 2010 Lake City is known around these parts for their Independence Day celebrations. The morning parade along the highway that runs thru town gets it all started. Appropriately, the veterans led the parade – can’t help getting a lump in the throat as they progress down the route, proudly hoisting the flag. The Arts Center hosts a used book sale which the girls enjoyed – a big hit obviously since they all came home with bags of books. There were many other activities that we didn’t participate in, but we did find a great vantage point to watch the fireworks show at night – however, a cold front moved in with rain and so we had to dash for shelter, but we ventured out into the rain to view the finale.
